About the IEEE Education Society

The IEEE Education Society was founded in 1957 and is one of the oldest technical Societies in IEEE. It is a worldwide Society of professionals dedicated to ensuring high-quality education in science and engineering. Our members engage students each day, research and propose new theories in learning science, and innovate classroom practice. We welcome your contributions to our community and hope you can benefit from the dialog the society helps to foster.

President's Message

IEEE Education Society's vision is to be a global leader in Engineering Education. The Society’s achievements depend largely on the work and effort of volunteers like you and me, along with the help of many others. In addition to being part of a community of professionals, this Society, and the IEEE in general, offers us multiple opportunities to develop our leadership skills, governance rules to facilitate rotation in all their positions, and career development within the organization. These opportunities are particularly relevant for me: I am a professor at the Universidad Politécnica of Madrid, and I believe, as an educator, researcher, and promoter, in the value in technologies applied to education and open education. After being a member of the Society for more than 15 years, co-founding the Spanish Chapter, and serving 10 years in different positions on the Board of Governors, I am honored to have been elected to serve as President in 2021-22... Continue Reading

Sinha considers his greatest professional achievement to be setting up a cutting-edge mmWave laboratory and developing the interest among postgraduate students, as well as fostering mmWave microelectronics education with an approach for technology transfer.

His advice for someone just getting started in their professional career is "to consider that engineering depth has potential to contribute to transdisciplinary breadth; the latter is where societal impact often occurs. To consider impact as that ultimate goal."

On the weekends, you might find Sinha reading or writing. His favorite book is Thank you for Being Late by Thomas Friedman. Once travel resumes, Sinha is looking forward to visiting Breuil-Cervinia, Italy again.

Additionally, Sinha commented, "I am grateful to the support by IEEE and IEEE Education Society over the years; engineering education, side by side, with technical research in microelectronics, has strengthened my approach. The academic rigor fostered by journals like the IEEE Transactions on Education remains to my appreciation - I am grateful to the reviewers and editors who contribute to my reflective journey."

Education Society Members Elevated by other IEEE Entities:

IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies (TLT) Special Issue Call for Papers

TLT Special Issue on "Designing Technologies to Support Professional and Workplace Learning for Situated Practice"

Abstract Submission (Optional): 15 April 2021
Full Manuscripts Due: 15 June 2021

In an era of global, organizational, and technological change, all of which are transforming the world of work, professional and workplace learning are critical for both employability and organizational competitiveness. Such learning is therefore needed on a greater scale than ever before, and the only way to provide that scale is through the integration of technology and learning. At the same time, if it is to serve the goal of boosting productivity, professional and workplace learning needs to be based around and integrated with work. Yet most advances in learning technologies have been made within K–12 and higher education settings, and in the area of formal learning environments in general. Technologies developed within formal education settings are nevertheless also increasingly being appropriated for use with/by professional learners in contexts other than those for which they were originally designed.

This special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies (TLT) on "Designing Technologies to Support Professional and Workplace Learning for Situated Practice" aims to showcase the latest developments and innovations in, and advance the scientific discourse on issues specific to, designing technologies that support learning for work. In setting out to achieve this aim, we place focus on learning that is intended to improve work practice, and that is situated within work activities and contexts.
